Many of our Hawaii Island radio amateurs live in areas that could be impacted by the Kilauea Volcanic eruption and the ongoing lava flows impacting the lower Puna District. Radio amateurs living in the Leilani Estates subdivision and the Lanipuna Gardens subdivision should evacuate now before Highways 130 and 132 are made impassable by lava.
Rick Ward, WH6FC is the south island ARES coordinator (Ocean View, Na’alehu, Pahala, Volcano areas). He is Mr. Preparedness and works hard to keep the hams prepared on 2m and HF. He has the 2m repeater in HOVE (Hawaii Ocean View Estates) and runs an ARES net on Sunday evenings at 7:30 (2m) and 8:00 pm on HF (starting on 7.088).
During the current eruption and lava flow emergency, please monitor the VOAD repeater atop Mauna Kea (146.70 MHz, 100 Hz tone) and the 40 meter interisland net frequency of 7.088 MHz (LSB). These frequencies can be used to send emergency traffic if the need arises.
Hawaii civil defense are going door to door requesting residents leave the area. Stay alert for warnings from Civil Defense Officials. The Pahoa Community Center, Keaau Community Center, and Sure Foundation Church are open. The shelters are pet friendly.
